I've been fly fishing for 40+ years. Never had an interest in fishing until I saw guys fly fishing on a small creek on LI NY, on my way to work every day. "This I gotta try!" I fell in love with a sport/hobby/obsession that has been an important part of my life. Not that I'm completely OCD, but I loved so much of the history and, at the time, elusive technical aspects. How did we ever learn to cast without the internet, videos, books, and instruction? None of which was available "in the day", yet we learned, maybe not the "easy way".

I've fished at least 1/2 of these wonderful United States, Canada, Scotland, Belize, and Mexico. My "likes" range from dry flies for Cutthroat on the Blackfoot, to Snook and Reds Inshore where I've escaped to, here in the Gulf Coast of SW Florida. I've done brief 1 hour "Walk On Fly Casting Experiences", 2 Day Fly Fishing Schools, and smallmouth guiding on the Potomac in VA and MD for L.L. Bean. I am a Certified Fly Casting Instructor with the Federation of Flyfishers International

I'm also what, I suppose, is considered a Master Fly Tyer and I am on the Pro Program with several manufacturers and outfitters, most notably Hareline Dubbin, one of the world's largest purveyors of fur, feather, hooks, and tinsel. I ran Fly Tying schools for Fly & Field, a premier outfitter in Chicago, IL. We went from the basic instruction to Master Classes with the likes of Lefty Kreh, Dave Whitlock, and Poul Jorgensen. Fly Tying's Royalty.

World Renown Bass/Guitar Builder and World Fly Fisher Stuart Spector: "...after fly fishing the world for over 50 years, I would highly recommending your taking a lesson with Todd. After 15 minutes of instruction, he added 15 feet to this 'old dog's' fly cast!"

Now? I'm retired from 4 decades in the guitar, bass, and amplifier business. I designed, marketed, and sold gear to music stores as an independent manufacturer's representative. Now? I fish, tie flies, fish, and think about fishing, when I'm not playing bass guitar with a few different ensembles. I also do bass tracks for singers, songwriters, and producers, internationally. So either a fly rod, bobbin and scissors, or bass guitar in my hands...

Let's talk about your expectations, what you would like to get out of fly casting, fly fishing, or fly tying instruction.

Location

Fish Targeted

Fly casting instruction: Absolute beginners, intermediate "brush up" sessions, to advanced techniques (distance, shooting line, presentation, special casts). "Trout techniques" to "Salt Water Arsenal" and anything in between.

Fly tying instruction: ALL styles from basic flies to just short of full dress salmon flies.

My targeted species and methods are ALL Fly Rod, ALL the time and include: Salmon, Trout, Large and Smallmouth Bass, Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, Seatrout, Steelhead from 2 weight to 12 weight. Here in SWFL, the Gulf or "Other" Coast of FL, we catch everything! I've caught, yes on the fly, anything from Mayan Cichlids to Flounder.

Fishing Seasons

Since we aren't talking about guiding, but instruction, there IS no season in SWFL. We have this weird "summer pattern" which involves thunderstorms EVERY day from June to August, but mornings are delightful and, most likely, an every day thing.

Licenses and Requirements

License requirements: If we are going to put a hook on the end of the tippet (not for most casting instruction), you're gonna need a Florida Fishing License, freshwater a minimum (that's where we do most of the instruction), Salt if you want to do that.

Requirements: Willingness to learn and have fun! You do not need ANY gear for fly casting instruction. I have any and all kinds of rods and reels setup, from Spring Creek to Surf and all in between. Fly tying? Again, you need no gear of your own! I supply all tools and materials.

Suggested Tip

If we accomplished our goals, a tip is never expected, but a lovely thank you! Just like restaurants is my guideline.
