From the Guides: Our Home - Cooper Landing, Alaska

Welcome to our Home: Cooper Landing, Alaska.

Alaska's #1 fishing destination.

Living and guiding in Cooper Landing, the #1 sportfishing destination in Alaska, is pretty surreal sometimes.  On a whim, I visited Cooper Landing with my brother several years ago for a week of fishing and adventure.  Little did I know that I would fall in love with this quaint mountain town and eventually make it my home.

Surrounded by towering mountains and rugged landscape, Cooper Landing is known worldwide as a premier recreation destination.  Home to world-class fishing, hiking, biking, rafting, kayaking, sightseeing, wildlife viewing and so much more, visitors are sure to find a myriad of opportunities for fun here.

Not only is it an excellent recreational destination, Cooper Landing also sits in a very convenient location on the Kenai Peninsula for other activities like ocean cruises, halibut fishing, whitewater rafting, bear viewing, and glacier hiking.

Cooper Landing is famously known for some of the most prolific salmon and trout fishing in the world and should be on everyone’s bucket list.  In the heart of town, Kenai Lake becomes the world-renowned Kenai River where it eventually flows into the ocean at Cook Inlet.  As such, Cooper Landing is not only where the Kenai River begins, it is also where upwards of 80 miles of world-class fishing begins.

Each year, millions of salmon make their annual migration from the ocean into the Kenai River.  This dramatic event begins early in the summer months and continues into the late fall.  The migration and spawning rituals of salmon bring food for native populations of trophy rainbow trout and Dolly Varden as well as an abundance of food for the entire ecosystem.  The combined influx of salmon into the river and the heightened activity levels of trout and Dolly Varden make for outstanding fishing, rarely found in other parts of the world.

The  opportunity to guide these waters has given me a great chance to share my home with people from around the globe.  Fishing here offers people from all walks of life and ability levels the chance to experience some of the best Alaska has to offer.

Our drift boat trips offer visitors the option to chase Sockeye Salmon (Red Salmon), King Salmon (Chinook Salmon), Coho Salmon (Silver Salmon), Pink Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, Dolly Varden and Arctic Grayling on a fly rod. Most visitors opt to try fly fishing, but we also offer conventional angling gear.  We highly encourage everyone to try fly fishing in Alaska as the techniques we use are simple to learn and the fish can often give you lots of opportunities to catch them.

Aside from guiding on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers over 120 days a year, I spend much of my free time chasing salmon and trout all over Alaska with a fly rod.  One thing I know is true about these rivers is that you could hook the fish of a lifetime on any given cast.  That really sets Cooper Landing, Alaska apart from many other angling destinations.

We hope you choose to make Cooper Landing, AK, your fishing destination, you’ll be glad you did!  With so many species and a variety of experiences to be had, we are confident you will find the trip of a lifetime you’re looking for!
