Cleveland rocks, and it fishes too!
Lake Erie draws fishers to Cleveland and northern Ohio with the hope of catching walleye, perch, steelhead trout and more. The Cuyahoga River and a few other streams and lakes hold the opportunity to catch additional species like smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie.
In "The Walleye Capital of the World", anglers are especially excited for 2019 as the previous year's walleye hatch was the best in recorded history for Lake Erie's Western Basin and the largest in 20 years in the Central Basin around Cleveland.
Popular Access Points
In Cleveland, some of the popular starting points for fishing trips, whether guided or DIY, are Lakewood Marina, Cleveland Lakefront State Park, and Edgewater Park.
Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world, brings many tourists to Sandusky every year, especially during the summer season. Sandusky, nearby Port Clinton, and Catawba Island are prime starting locations for fishing trips to add to anyone's adventures when visiting Cedar Point.
During the winter, ice fishing for walleye and perch feeds anglers' itch to catch fish.
After the ice melt, fishing for the region's favorite fish, walleye, typically begins in April.
Perch don't migrate away from the area, so they're plentiful year round, and the Fall is prime time to catch them at their largest sizes.
Smallmouth and largemouth bass are also around all year but best to target in the warmer months. Since bass are cold-blooded, they're more active when the water is warmer due to a high metabolism and need to feed more often.
Steelhead trout are stocked in Ohio's rivers, spend their summer in the deeper water of Lake Erie, then run back in the Fall through the rivers.
